Local leaders in Nyagatare District, on Wednesday,  held a cross-border security meeting with a delegation of Ugandan officials from the western districts of Ntungamo and Kabale.
The meeting mainly focused on security issues along the border and cross-border trade.

According to Nyagatare district officials, the meeting was a follow up of the joint permanent commission meeting that was held in Mbarara, Uganda between Nyagatare district officials and their Ugandan counterparts.

In his opening remarks, Nyagatare Mayor, Fred Atuhe Sabiiti said that the meeting was timely and would cement peace and security between the sister countries.

The two countries share a lot in common, he said, which necessitates regular meetings over issues of common interest.

Addressing the 35-person delegation, the Mayor highlighted cattle and property theft, drug trafficking and fire outbreaks, as the major security threats along the common borders.

"One of the most pressing issues we need to discuss in this meeting is continuous influx of banned Waragi into the country and animal theft. There have also been several cases of fire outbreaks from Uganda across our border,” he said.

The Kabale’s Residence District Commissioner, told The New Times that the meeting was impressive and vowed to jointly work with Rwanda in implementing its resolutions.
