The Rwanda National Police is in the process of dismissing 94 police officers over corruption-related crimes, the Deputy Commissioner General of Police, Stanley Nsabimana, has revealed.

Speaking at the closure of the anti-corruption week, DCG Nsabimana said that the officers were caught after a police disciplinary committee carried out an inside anti-corruption operation. 

He added that some of officers to be dismissed are from the traffic department.

Nsababimana added that the police force has put in place a serious disciplinary unit to crack down on police officers involved in corruption. He further pointed out that community policing is has supplemented their efforts.

An Ombudsman report that was tabled before parliament in 2009, cited numerous corruption cases within the police force, prompting a series of investigations.

"We have made serious investigations about those cases and the officers who dared to solicit for a bribe will be caught and punished,” he said.

Speaking to the press, Tito Rutaremera, the Ombudsman, hailed the police for taking strong measures to combat corruption within the sector.

"The reason why they have not been named in this year’s report is because the organ has shown commitment in fighting corruption, there has been a tremendous change, though it is not totally done away with,” said Rutaremera.

Rutaremera called upon all Rwandans to act as whistleblowers whenever they cite any act of corruption.
