KIREHE - Kirehe Community-based Watershed Management Project (KWAMP, on Wednesday, donated 333 Friesian cows worth over Rwf200 million to needy people in Kirehe District.

At the colourful hand over ceremony, in Kirehe district, the Agriculture Minister Dr. Agnes Kalibata, advised the beneficiaries to productively use the hybrid cows.

"These cows will help you get milk, manure for your farms and money from direct sale of milk,” she said.
The cows were donated under the auspices of the One Cow Per Poor Family Programme.

"There shouldn’t be any malnutrition with the kind of hybrid cows given to you. Look after them well for your own benefit.”
Janvier Gasasira, the coordinator of KWAMP, said the donation is in line with transformation from subsistence to commercial agriculture.

He added that more needy people in the district will soon be getting cows.

"We have started with 333 in four sectors. We shall donate at least 750 such cows across the district,” he said.
The Kirehe Mayor, Protais Murayira said that the district authorities and other partners have started a campaign to educate the population on modern farming.

"We give the recipients basic training on how to feed, milk and treat the cows. This is vital, especially for a beginner in the farming field,” he said.
