KARONGI - A 19-year old woman in Rubengera sector, Karongi district is accused of committing murder by prematurely terminating her pregnancy and dumping the 7-month foetus in a banana plantation.

Eudurene Masengesho, a Senior 4 student at IPESAR secondary school is currently under police custody after she confessed to committing the crime.

"After the terminated pregnancy, I attempted to bury the body in a nearby garden. I was frightened because no one knew about it,” Masengesho said.

The foetus was discovered, last week, after suspicious residents complained to local authorities.

Abortion is a criminal offence punishable by the law and according to Fiacre Nyamuhenda, the Chief Prosecutor at Karongi Intermediate court, Masengesho faces between five and ten years in  jail if convicted.
