I wish to respond to a story that appeared in The New Times of  December 8 where the Director General of Rwanda Electricity Corporation (RECO), Yves Muyange, tried to defend his organisation against corruption allegations. First and foremost, I wish to commend members of the Senate for bringing this  matter to public attention.

Whereas it could be true that RECO is a corruption-free body, I think it’s necessary that the management investigates these allegations.

For instance, last month, a water pipe around Muhima Sector in Kigali was damaged and water flooded in our homes. When we approached RECO technicians in Muhima Sector, they told us that fixing the problem would take months since water pipe equipment were out of stock.

But they suggested that if subscribers are in position to buy new pipes, the problem would be sorted out without delay.

This creates suspicion because subscribers, as RECO boss said, are not supposed to buy water pipes. Remember, the problem was not even in our compound but jut at the main road near our neighbourhood.
