KIGALI - The Director General of Rwanda Electricity Corporation (RECO), Yves Muyange, has strongly defended his organisation against corruption allegations saying that the corporation does not tolerate any form of fraud.

Senators, on Monday, accused RECO employees of corruption, pointing out that soliciting money from clients had become rampant and unchallenged by the utility.
The allegations made by the Senators include, subscribers having to pay for services that they are entitled to, free of charge.

However, speaking to The New Times yesterday, Muyange pointed out that RECO has strict measures against corruption and any employee found guilty of corruption is immediately dismissed.

"We have in place official and proper methods through which our clients can make all their payments. At any of our cash offices, we issue receipts and invoices to our clients for well defined services,” Muyange said.

"No technician of ours is allowed to extort money from clients for any service and no client is allowed to make payments to an individual.”

Muyange also said that the corporation had embarked on sensitization campaigns in both the urban and rural areas to teach people about the services it provides.

"We have a toll free number, 3535, where clients can report not only bad connections but also corruption tendencies by our technicians. We are doing our best to provide the best services to Rwandans.”

Reacting to reports about the non-insulated cables that may pose a danger to residents, Muyange said that RECO is handling the situation.

"We are working with residents and local leaders to locate all areas that need urgent intervention. We have marked each area with a red and white ribbon so that we can take action,” Muyange said.
