COSAFA giants Zambia play Ethiopia in the first of two quarter-final matches this afternoon.

The Chipolopolo enjoyed a relatively easy ride at the group stage of this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam after beating hosts Tanzania and Somalia and then drawing against Burundi.

These results left them top of Group A with seven points, one clear of Tanzania’s Taifa Stars and a further three ahead of Burundi who narrowly missed out on a quarter-final slot.

With two slots reserved for the best two qualifiers from the three groups, Burundi were edged by Zanzibar and Ethiopia.

The other day’s game is a contest between guest sides Ivory Coast and Malawi. This literally means that only two guest sides can qualify for the semi-finals.

Ivory Coast thrashed Sudan on Saturday to claim top spot in Group B with six points. Rwanda who play Tanzania tomorrow, finished second with five points, one clear of Zanzibar and three ahead of Sudan.

The final quarter-final pits defending champions Uganda against Zanzibar. Uganda topped their group (C) with seven points after a run of two wins and a draw.

The champions wrapped up their group campaign with a hard-earned 2-0 win over arch rivals Kenya.
