A team of 70 university students representing Rwanda in the East African Community Students Union (EACSU), yesterday, joined their counterparts from East Africa for a four-day conference in Burundi.

The meeting taking place at the National University of Burundi is expected to focus on the promotion of English as a tool of the integration process.

The country’s representative at the EACSU committee, Joseph Ngabonziza, said  that the focus of the meeting is to welcome and support the new entrants, Rwanda and Burundi.

"The meeting comes at a time when we (Rwandans) are putting in place measures to effectively adopt English not only in schools, but also as a means of coping up within the East African Community,” he said.

Ngabonziza  added that the meeting will give a chance to students from Rwanda and Burundi to discuss and, as well, learn from their counterparts from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

"We need to get their views and advice on how best we can play our role in making our country successful or benefit from the East African Community, especially after adopting the use of English,” he said.

According to Ngabonziza, the students will also discuss understanding the Common Market.
