UGANDA Cranes sealed a place in the last eight of the Cecafa-Tusker Cup after a 2-0 victory over Kenya yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
Emmanuel Okwi (82) and a penalty from skipper Andy Mwesigwa (90+2) earned maximum points for the defending champions to take them at the helm of Group C with seven points in three games.
Okwi beat two Kenyan defenders to slot past goalie Oluoch Boniface who later earned himself a red card for a reckless kick on Cranes striker Robert Sentongo.
George Odhiambo who substituted John Baraza missed two crucial chances to put Kenya ahead as he beat Andy Mwesigwa and Isaac Isinde but his powerful shot was saved by goalie Robert Odongkara.
Cranes dominated the game with Dan Wagaluka excelling on the right wing.
Cranes skipper Mwesigwa made no mistake as he sent stand-in keeper Mulinde Ndetto the wrong way to secure three points for Uganda who will now play Zanzibar in the quarter-final.
Shortly after the game, Kenyan coach Jacob Ghost Mulee announced his resignation only three months into the job.
He said, "I m disappointed with the team’s performance in the tournament,” he said.
Earlier, Ivory Coast leapfrogged Rwanda at the top of Group B following their compelling 3-0 victory over Sudan.
