GIVE MY STRIKERS A BREAK; Amavubi head coach Sellas Tetteh has asked the fans to give his strikers a break

KIGALI - AMAVUBI head coach Sellas Tetteh has come to the defense of his strikers who have continuously been criticised for sloppy finishing at the on-going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam.

The strikers found the back of the net during Amavubi’s opening Group B fixture against Ivory Coast (2-1) but the goals have dried out since.

The Ghanaian was forced to watch despairingly as Rwanda drew their final group games against Sudan and Zanzibar.
However, Tetteh has asked Amavubi fans to be patient with the players in question; Dady Birori and Peter Kagabo.

"You have to take it easy on the strikers. If you have watched our games, they have given their all. Sometimes, luck has not been on their side but we have to back them up because they need all the support they can get in the quarter-finals,” he said before stressing that scoring is not entirely up to the strikers.

"I don’t believe in putting the scoring responsibilities on the strikers. For me, scoring is a collective effort from the whole team.”

Amavubi secured their slot in the last eight after Friday’s goalless draw against Zanzibar. The result left Rwanda top of the group with five points, one clear of Zanzibar and a further two points ahead of Ivory Coast, who will leapfrog Rwanda if they beat Sudan this afternoon.

Sudan, who have managed a point from their opening two games still have a mathematical chance of qualifying provided they win today’s game.

Currently, Zambia’s Felix Sunzu leads the goal scoring charts with four goals.

Ethiopia’s Shemeles Bekele has three while Victor Nyirenda (Malawi), Davis Banda and Kenya’s Fred Ajwang have two goals each.
