RWANDA proved that they are the region’s ultimate beach volleyball kings after winning gold in the men’s category of the zonal CAVB Beach volleyball championship and silver in the women’s fray.

Buoyed by a big crowd at Serena Hotel in Rubavu, Flavien Ndamukunda & Jean Luc Mbonyuwontuma swept aside Ibrahim Oduor & Evans Bera in straight sets (21-14, 21-13 & 24-22, 22-20) while Pierre Marshall Kwizera and Leo Fidele Mutesi out-muscled Patrick Okaino  & Sila Makisa  (23-21, 21-14 & 21-14, 21-12).

Jean Luc Mbonyuwontuma attributed the win to rigorous preparations before the event.  "We prepared well for the competition-that’s why we dominated,” the 27-year-old said.

In the women’s fray, Emilienne Uwineza & Jeanette Niyigena and Judith Hakizimana & Charlotte Nzayisenga were undone by the Kenyan pairs of Dorcas Ndasaba, Margret Indakala and Moyo Okecho with Letich Wangui.

The director of Communication for beach Volleyball at the Confederation of African volleyball Alaa May praised the local volleyball federation for preparing a good tournament and said the game was very promising.

"It was a very good tournament with strong competition and I’m convinced that beach volleyball is on the rise in this country.”
