YESTERDAY’s goalless draw was enough to secure Rwanda a quarter-final ticket in this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

Amavubi, who marched into the tie needing a win to top the group (B) and a draw to progress to the next stage, passed the test against a resilient Zanzibar side which received vast support from the 60,000-seater national stadium in Dar es Salaam.

It was the second time in the competition that the wasps had failed to find the net and it should be a big worry for Sellas Tetteh who is trying to rebuild the side.
Amavubi were by far the dominant side in the first half and missed three very good chances through SC Kiyovu striker Daddy Birori.

After the break, Zanzibar improved causing Amavubi’s back four lots of problems.
On the 77th minute, Amavubi’s Kipson Atuhaire had his goal disallowed for off-side while three minutes later; Birori’s shot hit the bar.

Rwanda tops the group with five points but will drop to second place if Ivory Coast beat Sudan on Sunday.
The Elephants have three points but victory on Sunday will take them to six points. Zanzibar has four points while Sudan only has a point.

In the other day’s game, Zambia left Somalia for dead after a 6-0 rout in Group A.

Felix Sunzu scored four goals while Allan Mukuka and Venecious Mudenda also got their names onto the score sheet.

Action continues today with a Group C tie between Malawi and Ethiopia. Hosts Tanzania will Burundi in Group A’s final fixture.

Malawi needs a big win to finish top of the group while a win for Ethiopia will also secure them a quarter-final ticket.
Malawi and Uganda have four points each while Ethiopia is third with three points.

In Group A, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars need a victory to boast their chances of reaching the last eight. Yesterday’s 6-0 win left Zambia top of the group with seven points. Burundi is second with four points while Tanzania comes third with three points.

Somalia ended their campaign without a point.
