JALI - A woman in Jali Sector, Gasabo District in Kigali City was, recently arrested for beheading her baby moments after delivery.

Police spokesperson Willy Marcel Higiro said that Vestine Mukamana, 37, will be charged with murder.
"It is obvious, if she did it then it is a murder case,” Higiro said.

Mukamana is now in detention at Nyamirambo Police Station.

Higiro said that such crimes should be fought by everyone. "Police always receive cases of this nature.”

However he said that he did not know more about the details about the case, adding that the case will soon be preferred to the prosecution.

Mukamana says she killed the baby for fear that the newly born would not be welcome by its siblings since it had a different father. She said her husband is currently in Kigali Central Prison, also known as 1930, on Genocide charges.

She said that her three children could not tolerate another child not borne by their father. She was arrested on January 30 while digging a pit in which to bury the infant after keeping its limbs for four days.

It is said that after giving birth, she kept away from her children for fear that they would find out. "I killed the baby because I conceived outside my wedlock….I wanted to continue appearing as a faithful wife before my husband,” she claimed.
