HUYE - The Executive Secretary of the National Women Council in Huye District has praised women in the area for embracing cooperatives.

While addressing representatives attending a women congress on Wednesday, Gloriose Mukamwezi, observed that several women have enhanced their social wellbeing after joining cooperative societies.

The district women congress was organized under the theme ‘Women  and their role in development’.

"90% of all women in the district belong to a cooperative, resulting in a significant change in their livelihoods,” she said. "Besides, women are promoting a healthy society through community health insurance, and their role in promoting children’s education is remarkable.

She, however, observed that women are still reluctant to take credit facilities which can help them initiate serious income generating projects.

She appealed for more sensitization aimed at raising women’s awareness on the benefits of working with banks and other financial institutions.

Speaking at the meeting, MP Winfrid Niyitegeka commended the work done by the women representatives through the National Women Council, in terms of improving women’s livelihoods.

"The institution has done a lot to empower women,” Niyitegeka said. "Women have now embraced the savings culture as a way of developing themselves.”

She appealed to women to work harder for sustainable development.
