A secondary school student is in police custody for allegedly forging the newly issued Frw2000 note.

Gad Ngoga, 25, a Senior Six student at APE Rugunga in Kigali is detained at Nyamirambo Police Station after he was arrested in possession of seven counterfeit notes of Frw2000, a denomination that was introduced barely two months ago.

Police said the suspect had already used ten notes of the equivalent denomination to purchase materials which he was using to forge the note.

Police Spokesman Marcel Higiro called on the public to be vigilant against forgeries. He however declined to give details of the case, saying it might tamper with the investigations.

Ngoga admitted committing the crime and blames his actions on being an orphan. He asked for public forgiveness, and warned against such malpractices.

The Police Commandant in Nyarugenge District, Superintendent Jean Claude Kajeguhakwa, said that such crimes are becoming common in Kigali City because some people have continued to work from unrecognised places in slums.

He strongly warned against such illegal dealings saying that they deter a nation’s development, and called on the public to report such cases to police.
