AMAVUBI’s qualification to the last eight of this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup will be decided in their final Group B fixture against Zanzibar.

The Wasps, who reached last year’s final only to lose to Uganda, failed to find the back of the net in yesterday’s goalless draw against a much improved Sudan side at the national stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Both teams had chances to win it but squandered their chances. For Amavubi, Haruna Niyonzima, Dady Birori, Albert Ngabo and Jean Claude Iranzi all came close to scoring but a combination of sloppy finishing and good goalkeeping from the Sudanese goalkeeper kept the wasps at bay and Sellas Tetteh a rather frustrated man on the touchline.

In fact, Amavubi had Jean Luc Ndayishimiye a.k.a Bakame to thank for denying Nazar Hamad Khamis Martin and Nazar Hamid Nassir.

In the final 15 minutes, Tetteh brought on fresh legs in Kipson Atuheire but the APR striker still failed to break the deadlock. The result coupled with Ivory Coast’s 1-0 win over Zanzibar means that the group is wide open.

Although the result left Amavubi top with four points, all the other three side still have a mathematical chance of qualifying. The Elephants and Zanzibar have three points while Sudan, who were stunned 2-0 in their opening tie against Zanzibar have a point.

After yesterday’s goalless draw, Tetteh said, "This has been a well balanced game; they dominated the first half and we responded well in the second half.”

"It is sad that we could not seal our qualification today but that is football. We have to maintain our focus and keep our eyes on the prize,” the Ghanaian stressed.

Ivory Coast’s goal was scored by Bolou Kipre.
Action continues this afternoon in Group A as defending champions Uganda take on Malawi. Kenya’s Harambee Stars play Ethiopia in the other day’s game.
