Over 1,400 secondary school leavers in Musanze district have turned up for the ongoing national civic education programme known as Itorero ry’Igihugu.

The programme is aimed at equipping the youth with knowledge on the country’s development programmes, and values expected of responsible Rwandans citizens.

The 20-day programme intended for all students who completed senior six this year, will introduce the students to the lessons on Rwanda’s history, the national development agenda, gender and development and their role in the country’s development.

Veronica Nyinawimana, who is in charge of one of the sites hosting the group, said the programme will prepare the students to become better agents of change in their respective villages.

They will do so, she said, by teaching new government policies, and Rwanda’s true values embedded in its culture.

‘’The students are eager to learn more about the current changes taking place in the country, the prospects of creating jobs themselves,. It’s an opportunity to share ideas on how the youth should contribute to national development,’’ Nyinawimana said.

Speaking to The New Times in Busogo, excited students welcomed the initiative of undergoing civic education programme from their respective areas of residence.

They said that the opportunity to come together will also boost unity and reconciliation amongst them.
