AMAVUBI returned to winning ways following yesterday’s compelling 2-1 Group B win over Ivory Coast in the on-going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar es Salaam.

The Elephants, who are one of three guest teams in the competition, broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when striker Konadio N’dri Fabrice took advantage of a defensive slip up to beat Amavubi goalkeeper Jean Luc Ndayishimiye a.k.a Bakame.

Rwanda however restored parity on the stroke of half-time when SC Kiyovu striker Dady Birori soared to head in a Haruna Niyonzima corner.

Peter Kagabo then came off the bench to seal a shock win with a 77th minute header that beat Ivorian goalie Sangare Dadra.

After a shaky first half, Amavubi improved after the break. The timing of Birori’s goal was ideal for the 1999 winners, whose second-half performance was a vast improvement on their first.

Despite the win, Amavubi head coach Sellas Tetteh is cautious about his team’s chances in the two-week tournament.

"There are still two matches in the preliminaries to think further ahead,” Tetteh said.

"We won because we had the ability to turn a defeat into a win,” he added.

His Ivorian counterpart Koudio Georges blamed his team’s defeat on inexperience.

"It is a young side that still has a lot to learn, one of them being taking chances,” he told the media.
Zanzibar however tops the group on goal difference after stunning Sudan 2-0.

Ahmed Salum Shibou was the hero as he scored both goals to seal a major win for the islanders.
Burundi also hammered minnows Somalia 2-0 at Uhuru stadium to go top in Group A.

Action continues today with two Group C games. Defending champions Uganda take on Ethiopia while Malawi lock horns with Kenya.

The top two sides in each pool qualify for the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-place finishers.
