Over the last two weeks, Rwanda has hosted two international cycling tournaments, namely, Tour of Rwanda that was concluded this week, and the sixth Annual African Continental Road Cycling Championship that ended the week before.

The National Cycling Federation, deserves credit for, not only, successfully, organising the competitions, but for accomplishing the feat in such short order.

Teams from all corners of the world registered their teams into the competitions, and based on the way they were organised, there is no doubt, the visiting teams and cycling federations’ officials left the country impressed.

Rwanda, has previously organised other sports tournaments, including the U-20 Youth African championship, Zone five basketball club championships and the African Basketball Championship.

It is now time to, seriously, start considering such events as potential foreign exchange earners for the country. There are a wide range of sports categories that do not necessarily require massive infrastructure. Other sports federations in the country should borrow a leaf from the cyclists, basketball and football, and start bidding to host both regional and international tournaments.

Rwandan teams are always on the move, it is high time, we started inviting more competitions. This will not only promote particular sports within the community, but will bring in revenues for the country.
