THE National men’s rugby team-silverbacks yesterday capped a sensational Hat-trick of trophies after defeating Burundi 19-6 to lift their third successive Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) 15s trophy.

Following DRC’s withdraw, the final had to be brought forward and Silverbacks proved they are the kings of rugby in the zone after a spirited win over nemesis Burundi.

The first half ended with silverbacks leading 5-0 courtesy of Eric Mbarushimana’s try. Minutes into the second half, Burundi cut down their deficit to two points after a well taken penalty from their skipper Emmanuel Mbilizi.

Mid-way through the second half, tables were temporarily turned on the hosts when Burundi took a one point lead after another well taken penalty from scrum half Christian Mugabo at bring the fairly packed 25,000 seater Amahoro stadium on their knees.

But three successive penalties from inspirational captain Lucien Bikamba swung the game back in the hosts favour. Fly half Makmot Kevin added the icing on the cake with a last minute penalty to put the tie beyond Burundi’s reach.
In his post match remarks, Silverbacks head Coach Gerald Nsenga attributed the win to the rigorous training in the run up to the tournament.

"The players trained exhaustively and the rewards are there for everybody to see,” a delighted Nsenga said.
In the sides’ first encounter, Silverbacks registered a 39-13 victory.
