KIGALI - The president of the High Court and Principal Judge at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), Justice Johnston Busingye has urged newly sworn-in lawyers to uphold their legal profession by demonstrating only the core competencies and values of their profession.

He made the remarks yesterday while presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of 92 lawyers at Supreme Court premises.

"The oath you have taken is a difficult task, it is not just a ceremony, but you have vowed to serve the people that come to you while respecting the law and the courts of law as well as paying close attention to all matters related to the ethics of the profession, " he said.

Busingye urged lawyers to reciprocate the goodwill of the society and treat all people with decency and respect and, through service to the society, find ways of giving back to the society a little of their time.

In his remarks, Vincent Karangwa, the president of the Kigali Bar Association, called upon lawyers to respect their clients and courts of law.

Tom Allen, an American legal practitioner and one of the lawyers who was sworn-in, said that he is very proud and happy to become a member of the Bar Association of Rwanda adding that he believes in the leadership and the vision of the country.

Currently there are 730 lawyers in the country recognized by the courts of law.
