Police in Gasabo District yesterday mounted an operation arresting 30 people suspected to be behind criminal acts in several parts of the district.

The crime the district has experienced, police said, is a result of use of drugs and consumption of illegal brew.

The operation conducted in several parts of Remera Sector, a city suburb, also saw about 3,000 litres of illegal brew known as Mariture. The dealers were also arrested.
All suspects are currently detained at Remera Police Station.

The District Police Commander, Supt. Dismas Rutaganira, said that the operation was conducted upon the request of residents who were concerned by the increasing number of crimes that included gender based violence, assault and theft of mobile phones

"Residents brought their concerns to us,” he said.

Rutaganira, who commended the area residents for providing information on the whereabouts of drugs, said that such operations are still ongoing.
