THE National men’s rugby team - the Silverbacks showed immense desire to retain the CAR15s trophy after thumping Burundi 39-13 at Amahoro stadium in the opening tie of the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) 15s tourney.
Silverbacks’ physique and tactical acumen proved too much for the Burundians which explains the 18-3 first half score.
Kevin Makmot (scrum half), Olivier Uwamahoro (Center) and Kamanzi Didier (tight head) scored silverbacks’ while Ignace Nsanzimana weighed in with a neatly taken penalty.
Peter Hakizimana scored Burundi’s penalty.
Buoyed on by a big crowd, the Silverbacks added three more tries in the second half through Benjamin Makombe (flanker), Moise Hassan (back) and Moise Habumugisha to maintain their grip on the game.
Burundi’s Kwizera Saidi got a consolation try and penalty but it came a little too late for the visitors who have finished second best to Rwanda in the last two editions.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the other contender, will jet in this evening before playing their opening fixture tomorrow against Burundi.
