Kigali City, on Tuesday, launched a hygiene campaign aimed at involving churches in beautifying the city as well as increasing its green cover.
The Zion Temple Church in Kicukiro District was selected to lead the pilot programme.Vestine Mukeshimana, in charge of Public Health and Hygiene Inspection in the City, said authorities were optimistic the church would play a significant role in promoting sanitation.
"Through churches it is possible to adopt and spread the message of keeping our areas clean,” Mukeshimana said.
She noted that it was easy for Christians to inspire other residents, school administrators and other concerned institutions to get on board.
The strategy was part of the ongoing ‘Beautifying My Kigali’ program, an exercise that has seen city authorities together with residents get involved in hygiene activities both in homes and public areas.
The Head of the church, Pastor Diedonne Vuningoma, said Zion Temple will do all within its means to ensure that the task the church has been entrusted with is successful.
Kicukiro vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Georgette Rutayisire, promised to cooperate with the church in all its strategies in maintaining hygiene standards.
The city has also entered into similar partnerships with other institutions, including schools.
