Over 20 Rwandans were last week arrested for allegedly entering Uganda illegally.

Sources said the group was arrested during a security swoop in which about 200 people were rounded up in Kisoro town, south western Uganda.

22 of the apprehended Rwandans appeared before the Kisoro Grade Two Magistrate, Didas Mbonigaba, who sentenced them to six months in prison, after pleading guilty to charges of illegal entry.

The Rwandan High Commissioner to Uganda, Maj. Gen. Frank Mugambage, confirmed the reports, revealing that efforts were underway to find details of their case.

"We are still trying to follow up the story with Ugandan officials to try to find more about these cases. We are expecting our officials to visit them,” he said.

The envoy added that it would be prudent for Ugandan authorities to always inform them if such incidents happen for mutual understanding.

"If they find any Rwandan national in Uganda illegally we should be informed. Rwanda is always willing to cooperate,” he said.

It was reported in Uganda’s Daily Monitor that most Rwandans cross into Kisoro District to seek casual jobs through the porous borders.

The paper also quoted the Officer in-charge Kisoro Police Station, Fred Lumala, saying ‘Court remanded 20 people and ordered the deportation of eight Rwandan juveniles.”
