In a music industry that is dominated by men, 17-year-old Aisha Uwimana is determined to make it to the top! Teen Times is proud to hang out with this young Rwandan star and this is what she had to say!

Tell us about yourself?
I was born Gabon, I’m a student at APE Rugunda and next year I will be completing my senior six.

When did you develop the passion for music?
Since I was eight years old: I liked Tupac and 50 Cent’s songs! I then developed the hunger for HIPHOP and I believe that this was my calling.

How many songs have you released?
I have several songs but four have been hitting on radio waves including the number one single called ‘High school’.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
I love Ciara. She is a good dancer with a great voice. She is a complete entertainer!

What do you think can be done to promote Rwanda’s music industry?
We need investors who are going to sink a lot of money in the music industry. This should include acquiring professional music producers and promoters.  We also need more television stations so that our videos can be played.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I see myself as a professional musician. I want to build my career in music and I envision myself owning a record label!

As a young woman, what’s your view on becoming successful in Rwanda?
The music industry in Rwanda is quite challenging for girls. You have to work harder than men due to the misconceptions people have about music.

How do you overcome these misconceptions?
Well, I have worked with other female artistes such as Paccy and Knowles! Other things that I do not have power over, I just ignore them.
