RWANDA is not fielding a team at this year’s Africa table tennis championship which starts today in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The president of the national table tennis federation Medard Rutayisire told Times Sport yesterday, "We failed to send a team to Yaounde because of we could not raise the funds."

The last time Rwanda participated in the continental championship was in 2004 when the event was hosted by Congo Brazzaville.

The team returned empty handed.

Countries in contention this year include South Africa, Ghana, Gabon, Libya, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Egypt, Sudan, defending champions Nigeria and hosts Cameroon.

Uganda is eyeing a place in the top four. Their confidence sprouts from a rich history on the international stage. Uganda won bronze at the 1995 and 1995 All Africa Games.

Over the years, Egypt and Tunisia have dominated the event.
