APR edged arch-rivals Rayon Sport on penalties (5-4) to lift yesterday’s Shyaka memorial tournament at Amahoro stadium.

Former Atraco striker Peter Kagabo put Rayon ahead on the 33rd minute when his shot took a huge deflection off Tchimanga Mutamba to send Jean Luc Ndayishimiye a.k.a Bakame the wrong way.

APR responded in the second half through Zambian import Joseph Bwalya. The striker equalized on 60th minute through a fine header from a Jean Claude Iranzi corner.

Moments later, Bwalya could have doubled the lead but Rayon’s custodian Ismail Mfashingabo pulled off affine save.
Abedi Mulenda also got a great opportunity after beating Bakame but his weak curling shot was cleared off the line by Donatien Tuyisenge to make sure that the game was decided on spot kicks.

Emmanuel Sebanani scored APR’s fifth penalty while Frank Makengo’s spot kick was saved to gift the army side the title.

Earlier in the day, Ferwafa select thrashed journalists 5-0.
The tournament was held in memory of Radio 10 sports presenter Claver Shyaka who died this year (August 12).
The game’s proceeds will go directly to the deceased’s family. Shyaka is survived by two children and a widow.
