Traders in the Central Business District yesterday joined hands with residents of Nyarugenge District in the ongoing campaign dubbed: ‘Beautifying My Kigali,’ aimed at having a greener and more hygienic city.
The exercise which was also attended by all city cleaning associations, was held along the newly constructed City Roundabout-Nyamirambo road where they planted grass and flowers to prevent soil erosion.
The one-month exercise was led by Jeanne d’Arc Gakuba, Kigali City vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, and District authorities.
The exercise will also be conducted in Primary Schools which are supposed to have planted trees, grass, flowers and constructed pavements by the beginning of next academic year.
Gakuba said that each school will also be tapping rain water and have separate toilets for both boys and girls.
"We also selected places of worship such as churches and mosques,” Gakuba said. They include Kacyiru Mosque, St Famille and Zion Temple. The exercise will also see all houses repainted.
She said that the exercise also aims at sensitizing residents on personal hygiene and taking part in environmental protection.
Gakuba also revealed that by the end of April next year, retaining walls will be built along all roads which pose a risk.
