17 injured in grenade accident

NYAGATARE - 17 people were on Saturday morning injured when a grenade exploded in Nyangara cell, Gatunda sector, Nyagatare district. Police said that the victims were residents who were carrying out community work to construct a school.

NYAGATARE - 17 people were on Saturday morning injured when a grenade exploded in Nyangara cell, Gatunda sector, Nyagatare district.

Police said that the victims were residents who were carrying out community work to construct a school.
According to Police, the grenade explosion took place at 8:30am near a cathedral where residents were constructing a school.

"Residents were constructing a school near a cathedral in a community when the explosion took place at exactly 8:30am. We believe the grenade could have been an unexploded ordinance left behind during the liberation war.,” a police official told The Sunday Times.

"With the help of ambulances and our vehicles, we rushed the victims to Nyagatare and Nyarurema hospitals. Some of them were in critical condition but others who sustained minor injuries and were immediately discharged,” he added.

The area where the explosion took place was the theatre of operations during the liberation war between 1990 and 1994.
