NYAGATARE - Intra Health Rwanda, an NGO that specializes in the health sector, on Friday trained local authorities in three sectors of Nyagatare district how to stem Gender-Based Violence. The participants were drawn from the sectors of Karangazi, Musheri and Rwimiyaga.

Dr. Benon Rukunda, the director of Nyagatare Hospital, said that Gender based Violence has been rampant in the district and called on participants to step up the fight against the vice.

"We have been receiving several cases of GBV at the hospital but these are very few because there are some people who even fear reporting these cases. We need everyone’s participation in fighting GBV crimes,” he said.
Reports made by Intra Health in the district, say of the 14 sectors, Nyagatare sector topped others in GBV cases followed by Karangazi.

Desire Rwabusisi, the head of GBV and mental disabilities at Nyagatare Hospital, attributed cases of child abuse like rape in the area to negligent parents.

"Some cases rise during holidays when parents send their school children in farms alone where they are raped by herdsmen,” he said.
