RWANDA has plunged even further down the latest Fifa rankings released by the world football governing body on Wednesday.
Rwanda dropped from 118 to 127, their worst position since 1999. The drop reflects a slump in the team’s fortunes on the field, including a disastrous performance in the opening two fixtures of the 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifying campaign.
The wasps, Cecafa champions in 1999 and finalists in 2009 suffered identical 0-3 defeats against West African giants Ivory Coast and Benin.
Many Cecafa countries also suffered similar fates, with Uganda also dropping down from 63 to 69, Sudan dropping three places down from 93 to 96 and Kenya dropping one place to 116 while Tanzania, hosts of this year’s Senior Cecafa Challenge Cup dropped four places to 124.
Rwanda endured their worst ever ranking in 1999 when they were positioned 178th at the end of July.
Apart from Benin which dropped four places to 74, Rwanda’s other Group H opponents Ivory Coast and Burundi remained unmoved in 19th and 136th slots respectively.
The rankings only add to Sellas Tetteh’s frustrations. The Ghanaian has failed to find a winning formula for Amavubi after a recent run of three defeats on the trot. On top of Ivory Coast and Benin defeats, the team suffered a 1-2 loss in Wednesday’s international friendly against Malawi in Blantyre.
SC Kiyovu forward Dady Birori had given the visitors the lead with a 5th minute goal but second half strikes from Frank Banda and APR forward Victor Nyirenda swayed the game back in Malawi’s favour.
Overall, Spain, the Netherlands and Brazil retained their positions at the top of the table while Egypt moved back into the top ten at the expense of Russia.
