THE winners of this year’s Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup will pocket $30,000 (Rwf17.7m), about Rwf6m more than what last year’s winner claimed.

According to Cecafa’s Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, the increase is down to Serengeti Breweries’ lucrative sponsorship package worth about $450,000 (Rwf. 266m).

The losing finalists will bag $20,000 (Rwf11.8m) while the third placed side will settle for $10,000 (Rwf5.9m) respectively.

The event, which stands out as Africa’s oldest football competition, will run from November 27-December 13 in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza.

Group A features hosts Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi, and Somalia, Group B has Rwanda, West African giants Ivory Coast, Sudan and Zanzibar while Group C pits reigning champions Uganda against Kenya, Ethiopia and Malawi.

The top two teams and the best two qualifiers from all the three groups will progress to the last eight. For the likes of Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Sudan, the event is a good platform for January’s Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) which will be hosted in Khartoum, Sudan.
