MUSANZE - As the national land registration exercise continues, local authorities have been urged to sensitise residents on laws regarding land management, and to play a central role in addressing land-related issues.

This was the message delivered to local administrators, who included police and other security organs and heads of district land bureaus, during a two-day training workshop aimed at raising awareness on the organic law on land management.

The legislation touches broader issues such as inheritance and women’s rights on land ownership, as well as the use and role of land committees.

The training was organised by Care International.
The exercise will be carried out in the three cells of Bisoke, Kaguhu and Nyonirima, as a pilot scheme to ensure that awareness on the land law will help during the land regularisation exercise.

‘’Our role is to provide opportunities of training, dialogue and awareness aimed at arming the local population to fully understand their rights on land issues, which is partly our goal of improving livelihoods of people,’’ Guiseppe Daconto, one of the trainers said.

Opening of the training, Damascene Munyangaju, the Deputy Registrar of Land Titles, noted that land registration exercise will boost the lives of the rural poor.

He added that land-related issues will be addressed during all the various processes leading to land registration by the National Land Centre.
