ERITREA maintained their fairytale run in the Africa continental road cycling championship, taking place in Kigali, after Daniel Teklehaimanot won yesterday’s 44km Individual time trial race.

The 22-year-old, who rides for Switzerland club Chervelo, used 44 minutes, 37 seconds and 88 micro seconds, 51 seconds clear of South Africa’s Reinardt Rensburg Van Janse in second place and a further two minutes and 33 seconds clear of Algeria’s Lagab Azzedine.

"My target is to win this competition and represent Africa at the London Olympics Games,” Teklehaimanot, who is rated highly on the continent, said.

Rwanda’s Adrien Niyonshuti, who endured a slow start, was 10 micro seconds shy of third place.

The MTN Energade rider now has to be at his very best in Sunday’s final stage to stand a chance of landing one of two slots available for the London 2012 Games.
