Police Tuesday arrested two people on in Kigali for allegedly counterfeiting local currency. 25-year old Isaac Habyarimana and Juvenal Minani, 20, were arrested after they were found forging 5,000 franc notes.

They are currently being held at Kicukiro Police Station.
Police Spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga, warned that whoever indulges in such criminal activities would face the law.

"Counterfeiting of money is illegal and has a negative impact, not only to the country’s economy, but to households as well. It increases money in circulation and in the process money loses value,” Kayiranga noted.

"Police also wishes to alert all Rwandans to be vigilant about receiving money in any transaction and always check if the notes are authentic,” he added.

He said that measures are under way to combat counterfeiting and urged all Rwandans to share information on any person suspected to be doing the illegal business.
Cases of counterfeit, especially of academic transcripts and forging signatures have been on the rise in the recent past.

Last month, police arrested two people in Remera for establishing a business dealing in forged academic transcripts and other official documents.

In August, another group was arrested for forging the signature of the Minister of Health, Dr. Richard Sezibera and defrauded hospitals and pharmacies in the country.
