KARONGI - Residents of Gitesi sector in Karongi district on Tuesday woke up in shock after a man slashed his friend’s neck accusing him of bewitching his lover.

26-year old Noheli Muhayimana used a panga to cut Noheli Hitimana, 27, thrice on the neck, killing him instantly as he headed to hospital with his pregnant wife.

Hitimana’s body was taken to Kibuye Hospital for a post-mortem. "I met him in the morning while going to the hospital with his wife and killed him because he had also vowed to kill my girlfriend after bewitching her last year,” Muhayimana told The New Times at Bwishyura Police Station where he is currently detained pending formal charges.

Muhayimana, a farmer, revealed that he had been hunting for Hitimana since a planned wedding with his lover flopped early last year.

"I intended to kill Hitimana since the day I failed to wed my girlfriend Thacciana Nyiransababera because she had been bewitched and I have since been looking for him,” an unremorseful Muhayimana said.

According to Police records, Gitesi sector has the record for gruesome incidents. About two months ago, another man in the area hit a friend in the head with an axe, accusing him of trying to woo his lover into another relationship.

Muhayimana faces life in jail if convicted of murder.
