Tigo Rwanda, on Monday, joined other institutions in supporting the tree planting campaign that is lasting a week.

Tigo officials said that it is the company’s corporate social responsibility to support all national campaigns that can boost the country’s policies on the protection of the environment.

"As Tigo we have developed a corporate position on a number of issues including those which directly and indirectly affect our business. Protecting the environment is one of them,” Nina Ndabaneze, the company’s Marketing Manager, said.

"We are conscious of the environment and we are committed to protecting it. The tree planting campaign is one of those initiatives we support,” she added.

The national ‘Tree Planting Week’ kicked off Monday with the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), led by the force’s top brass, planting about 15,000 trees, worth Rwf 7m, in Kami, Kinyinya Sector in Gasabo District.

Kigali City Council also led other public and private institutions to engage in the tree planting exercise. Tigo employees participated in the planting of about 8000 tree.

This is the second tree planting exercise the company has been involved in this year. In April, Tigo staff, including several members of student clubs and an Environmental awareness NGO carried out tree planting in the Akagera National Park, where a total of 60,000 seedlings were planted.

The environmental drive was embarked upon to create awareness of the importance of maintaining the desired environment for the flora and fauna that populate the park.
