AFTER securing a double (national league and Carre’ d’AS) this season, the rector of National University of Rwanda (NUR), Professor Silas Lwakabamba, has promised to provide financial support to the team when they compete in next year’s Africa Club Championships.
This was revealed by NUR’s sports officer, Albert Kayiranga, who said that the rector had promised to support the team in their preparation for the continental championship slated for April.
"He promised to support the club and also to look into the sports scholarship scheme,”Kayiranga said.
The varsity side received a heroes’ welcome, this week, after sealing the double with the Carre d’AS title last Sunday.
Fidele Nyirimana’s side grinded out a hard fought 3-2 win over arch rivals APR in the Carre d’AS final at Amahoro’s indoor stadium.
UNR’s chances looked slim after three sets when they trailed APR 1-2 (25-14, 22-25, 28-30), but the team bounced back to win the fourth set (25-21) and the decisive set 15-13 to leave their on-looking rector excited.
On top of the trophy, NUR also pocketed Rwf300, 000 for the victory.
