KIGALI - The Association of Commuter Taxi Drivers (ATRACO) revealed yesterday that there will be no increase in the cost of public transport despite the recent increase in fuel prices.

The government over the weekend announced the increase of fuel prices which saw a litre of diesel peaking for the first time in 2010 from Rwf 913 to Rwf 933 (US$ 1.5), while that of petrol increased from Rwf920 to Rwf944.

The increase, according to government, was attributed to persistent increase of international oil prices over the past few months.

The president of ATRACO, Dodo Twahirwa, said that commuters will not have to anticipate a hike in transport fairs because both Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) and the association had decided to stabilize the cost.

"Tomorrow, we will have a meeting with RURA to discuss some issues entailed in the fuel charges, but regardless of the resolutions therein, transportation charges will not be affected,” Twahirwa assured in an interview.

He also added that although taxi operators will make a loss in the short run, all responsible parties were working to provide a win-win situation without affecting transport costs.

Efforts to reach Régis Gatarayiha the acting Director General of RURA, were futile as his phone was off.
