KARONGI - Seven women are contesting for the position of woman Member of Parliament in the western province, following the resignation of Solange Tuyisenge early this year.

The seven candidates are Clotilde Mukamana, Jeanne Henriette Mukabikino, Alice Murekatete, Jeanne d’Arc Nyinawase, Bellancille Umurungi, Mukayisenga Celine and Donatile Bakuriyehe.

Another contestant identified as Marie Gorette Uwera pulled out of the race. While speaking to the electorate ahead of the elections slated for Friday this week, most of the candidates promised full commitment and hard work as a way of achieving what is expected of them.

"I will jointly work with you to improve the social and economic status of all Rwandans most especially the women,” Mukamana, who is currently in charge of
social welfare at Bwishyura sector in Karongi District said.

41-year old  Mukabikino also promised to initiate laws suiting Rwandans to bring about significant change in the social welfare, justice, good governance and
economic sectors.

Presiding over the campaigns last Friday, at the provincial headquarters in Karongi District, Oswald Burasanzwe, an official from the National Electoral Commission challenged the candidates to practice mature politics.

"You should endeavour to emulate other leaders who practice good and non-divisionary politics,” Burasanzwe warned.

Statistics show that over 1000 voters, including members of the District advisory council and those at the sector level are expected to cast their votes.
