KARONGI - A total of 15 calves were distributed early this week to vulnerable residents of Rubengera Sector, Karongi district, as part of the government cattle stocking programme commonly known as  girinka.

At a colourful ceremony that was witnessed by hundreds of Karongi residents, the calves were donated by fellow residents who acquired the cows early this year.

While presiding over the handover function, Emile Rukesha, the sector’s Executive Secretary, requested the beneficiaries to emulate their colleagues.

"This is a sign of goodwill, cooperation and determination to help raise each other out of poverty. Once your cows have multiplied, you should also do the same,” Rukesha told the excited residents.

He challenged the general public to fully utilize such opportunities in order to effectively raise their social and economic status.

Anastase Muhayimpundu, one of the beneficiaries could not hide his excitement. "This cow will provide milk, manure and income to help

my family. This will help in many various aspects to improve our lives,” he said.
