Rayon Sports kicked off their Rwanda Premier League campaign with a hard fought 2-1 over Rutsiro 2-1 at the Kigali Stadium on Saturday night.
It took an 89th minute goal from Mucyo Didier Junior to settle the nerve wrecking encounter which could easily be classified as the best game in week one of the competition.
Rayon Sports dominated possession from the start of the game but it was not until after the quarter hour mark that they had their first clear cut chance.
Felix Ndekwe who was looking lively on the right wing sent a sublime pass to Willy Onana in the 19th minute and the Cameroonian attacker's strike inside the penalty box hit the bar to the relief of the Rutsiro fans.
Rayon started making inroads into the Rutsiro vital area and their effort was rewarded in the 26th minute when Burundian international Mbirizi Eric weaved his way through a forest of legs in the Rutsiro penalty boss before placing the ball to the blind side of goalkeeper Pascal Dukuzeyezu for the opener.
Rutsiro decided to change their formation as they held their might at the back and pushed more men forward to catch Rayon on the break. It proved useful as the likes of Mumbere Malekidogo caused problems for the Rayon back four especially Isaac Mitima.
Rayon Sports ended the first half on a 1-0 lead despite Rutsiro lifting up their game.
The second half started on an even note with both teams having fair share of possession but it was Rutsiro who seized the midfield with Amza Nkubito running the show on his own.
Rayon Sports defense went sleeping in the 55th minute and they were punished by Congolese forward Mumbere Malekidogo who outwitted his marker and lobbed a superb effort past goalkeeper Amani Twagiramukiza for the equalizer.
It was an end to end affair with both teams playing to their strength as many chances were created and missed.
Rayon had arguably the best chance in the second half in the 80th minute but Rutsiro keeper Pascal Dukuzeyezu saved Boubacarr Traore's strike with the rebound also being headed to safety on the goal line.
Rayon Sports finally broke Rutsiro's resilience in the 89th minute when Mucyo Didier Junior connected beautifully from a corner to hand the Blues all three points.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Rwamagana City could not stand the might of visiting Gorilla FC as Victor Murdah's 33rd minute strike helped Gorilla to a 1-0 win.
Elsewhere in Kigali, an 88th minute penalty which was beautifully converted by Guy Herve Ngono was all what Gasogi United needed to defeat Mukura Victory by one goal to nothing.
At the Nyamata Stadium, Bugesera FC were whipped three goals to one by Kiyovu Sports.
Bienvenue Mugenzi's 13th minute opener, an own goal from Kamoso in the 32nd minute and a Muzamiru Mutyaba 72nd minute strike were enough for the visitors whilst Bugesera's consolation was scored by Theophile Nyandwi.
