Police has changed its driving tests’ registration system from District Police Units (DPUs) in districts to Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) branches in districts to ease the registration process.

Traffic Police chief, CSP Vincent Sano, said that any person paying for theory or additional categories in RRA now automatically qualify for the tests.

"The new approach was established to facilitate the registration processes of aspiring drivers and its time saving,” Sano said.

The registration kicked off November 1 and is slated to end next week. However, Sano said, the registration would be extended if need arises.

Sano said an estimated 120, 000 will sit for the tests, 80, 000 for provisional and 40, 000 for additional categories (practical). About 97,000 sat for the previous tests held in April this year.

General driving tests are scheduled for November 16.
Sano also noted that measures to deal with the issues of illegal driving licenses have been initiated and that a number of people who have been trying to bribe police officers have been arrested.

He added that the move to grant driving schools powers to select candidates vying for drivers’ licenses is a plan in pipeline.

"Currently there a few driving schools in the country and some don’t have all the necessities to cater for this exercise. We are now trying to encourage the private sector to invest in these institutions to have at least two driving schools in each district.” Sano said.

There are only 17 registered driving schools in the country.
