NYAGATARE - A joint security operation conducted by Police and sector authorities, on Monday, netted 200 people in connection with illicit drugs, in Barija village, Nyagatare sector in Nyagatare District.
According to Police officials, the suspects were involved in transaction of different illicit drugs that included local brew commonly known as Kanyanga, and Chief Waragi smuggled from neighbouring Uganda.
Others arrested had no identifications and most of them had sneaked into the district illegally, according to Police. Speaking to reporters after the operation, Nyagatare Sector Executive Secretary, James Gakuru, said the operation targeted suspected criminals.
"Crimes like rape, defilement and many others have been on the rise in our sector and are mostly fueled by the increasing influx of illicit drugs in the district. We are working with Police to completely end this problem,” he said.
Gakuru appealed to village leaders to always report crimes.
Jacqueline Murungi, one of the suspects, admitted to dealing in banned gin, arguing it was her family’s source of income.
