NYAGATARE - Of the 1,848 students who registered to sit for the Ordinary Level Examinations in Nyagatare District, 105 students, representing 5 percent of the total number, missed exams, an official has said.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the first exam, Nyagatare district director in charge of education, Martin Hitimana said that some students who missed exams had personal issues.

"We have so far confirmed that 105 students from several schools missed the exams yet they registered. Some of the students registered in schools in the neighbouring Uganda while others abandoned owing to personal issues,” he said.

Hitimana added that preparations were well in order in all examination centres in the district, to ensure security for exams.

At some examinations centres which The New Times visited, the exam started at 8:30, with students declaring no difficulties during the course of the first exam. 
At SOPEM Rukomo, students expressed optimism of passing the exams, saying that the questions set were in line with the current curriculum.

"We have finished African History and all questions were very easy. We studied everything and we expect more similar settings and other exams,” Aimable Harelimana, one of the candidates said.

His female counterpart, Gloria Kirabo, added that she was ready to emerge the best female student in the district. 
"The exam was very easy for those who revised enough. I am among those and I expect to become the overall best student,” she said. 

Timothy Nkuriyingoma, the headmaster SOPEM Rukomo and chief invigilator at the centre, commended the National Examinations Council for good preparations this year. 
"There were excellent preparation this year. All exams were ready at the centres before the examination day. We thank the National Examinations Council,” he said.
