NGOMA - Police in Ngoma district detained four students, over destruction of school property at E.A.V. Gitwe Secondary school, in Rukira sector yesterday.
The ring leaders are all students in senior three.
The arrested student and 11 others still at large, are wanted by the police after breaking windows of eleven classrooms and destroying 250 text books.
Police said that the acts of the students are not only criminal, but disturbed the tranquility of the neighboring community.
"We are holding the students and looking for others still at large. It is a crime to destroy property, whether you are a student or not,” said Ngoma District Police Commander (DPC), Albert Gakara.
Faustin Bangumukunzi, the Director of Studies at the school said the students were all known for indiscipline.
He said that the students were supposed to have been expelled, but were given the benefit of doubt, because they were national examinations candidates.
"The students have destroyed class room windows and library books. Our lenience has been overstretched…the students will be expelled indefinitely and charged over their actions,” he said.
According to Mugabo Raul, a parent, students in the area have generally developed indiscipline. He said that parents, teachers and all stakeholders, should work hard to reverse the trend.
‘I am not surprised that the students have gone as far as destroying school property. They drink and smoke. They don’t respect elders…it is pathetic, we need to do something as parents,” he said.
The students’ strike comes in a wake of an ugly scenario, where a senior three student of Kabale Secondary School, bullied an S.1 student injuring him seriously. The student was later taken to Kibungo hospital.
