ADRIEN Niyonshuti’s impressive performance this season has earned him a new one-year deal at South African club MTN Energade.
The two-time Tour of Rwanda champion joined South Africa’s leading cycling club in 2009 and his exploits in mountain climbing races have convinced the club to hold onto him.
"I’m excited about the news. It is great to know that the club values my input and efforts,” the 23-year-old rider said before adding, "My target now is to race at the 2012 Olympics games in London.”
"MTN Energade is a wonderful club that looks after its cyclists well. We are provided with all the necessary equipment to help us perform. It is without doubt one of the best in South Africa and on the continent,” Niyonshuti added.
At 23, Niyonshuti boasts among other things racing alongside all time cycling greats like seven time tour of France (Tour de France) winner Lance Armstrong and ten time tour of Ireland winner Mark Cavendish.
Over the weekend, the elite rider continued his build up to next week’s Africa Continental Cycling Championship by sweeping the two-day tour of Kigali in 4 hours, 21 minutes and 54 seconds.
Gasore Hategeka finished second 14 seconds off the pace while Namibia’s Dan Craven, who also rides for MTN Energade rounded off the top three slots after using 4 hours, 22 minutes and 18 seconds.
