Member of Parlimiment, Francoise Mukayisenga, has called on rural women to use all opportunities provided by the government designed to foster women emancipation for their development.

She was addressing residents of Nyabihu during celebrations to mark the International Day of the Rural Women over the weekend.

Mukayisenga said women need to use the opportunities provided by the government to improve themselves economically and socially.

"We need to first understand the government’s policy to foster the development and women emancipation, then we go for it for our own good,” 

Accompanied by 67th Battalion commander, Lt Col. Joseph Nzabamwita, and Vice Mayor Frank Kobukeye, Mukayisenga called on local government officials to sensitise rural women on the importance of accessing loans and knowing their rights.

According to Mukayisenga, Rwanda is an example in the world that has the majority of women in the parliament and other areas of governance.

"We have got women who have gone to Sudan and Haiti for peace keeping missions; I think the spirit should motivate other women to develop and not look at their lives and family alone,” Kobukeye said.

During the celebrations hundreds of residents and army personnel took part in the monthly community work, Umuganda, to protect Lake Karogo.
