KIGALI - Led by the Speaker of Parliament, Rose Mukantabana, ten legislators joined over one thousand residents of Mageragere Sector, Nyarugenge District, to participate in community work locally known as Umuganda.

The exercise specifically targeted the prevention of soil erosion which has affected farming activities in the hilly region.

4,000 holes in which trees will be planted were dug.
Mukantabana commended the residents for their hard work and also sensitized them on gender equality by calling upon women to pursue education f order to improve their livelihoods.

"The government has implemented very many programs aimed at empowering women; I implore you to take up all the opportunities so that your lives can be improved,” Mukantabana said.

The Mayor of Nyarugenge District, Theophila Nyirahonora, commended the parliamentarians for participating in community work in the area, which she said is a sign of togetherness and a boost to the residents’ hard work.

"Many people living on this hill complain about soil erosion during the rainy season. However, the first step to remedy for the problem has been made through your efforts and the cooperation we have shared today,” she told the parliamentarians.
